Attacking a more valuable piece as intermezzo

This type of intermezzo strikes a more valuable piece before addressing the opponent’s previous move. You will learn how redirecting the tempo toward a higher-value target can come as a big surprise to your opponent!

Example:

Krasenkow, Michal - Macieja, Bartlomiej (2004)

Krasenkow came up with a brilliant idea: 1.c5!

Black has nothing to do, but take the bishop - 1...Bxf1

This is where Michal Krasenkow saw something Bartek Macieja had missed: 2.cd! attacking the queen!

Black has to move the queen away: 2...Qd7 3.Kxf1

White's extra pawn on d6 doesn't give Black any hope for survival. This example shows that even very experienced players sometimes blunder intermezzos.
